5 Days Left, and No Plot Outline!

Filed under: Odds and Ends - onewomansworld @ 2:30 pm

Aaaaargh. I’m getting stressed out about NaNoWriMo. It’s Friday. I haven’t gotten my plot outlined. My writing friend here where I live is waiting for the deadline, and I’m still trying to decide if I can summon up the gumption to actually write an outline. The kickoff party is tomorrow, and then I start writing Halloween night at midnight.

What is my problem? I just seem to be able to find SO many other preferable things to do at any given moment. Hence, the sporadic blog-posting. It all goes back, I guess, to what I had to say about why I write. I love the ideas, the imagining. I don’t so much love the actual moment of putting fingers to keyboard and creating something lasting. And yet I’m in love with the feeling of having written something.

Oh well. This time a month from now I either will or will not have finished. :) Until then, I’ll just focus on “bookin’ it.”

:)

  1. I know how you’re feeling right now, Heather… I thought I was feeling way too calm over this whole thing and then it hit me yesteray… I have NOTHING to write! I don’t even know if I like my original idea for a story anymore! I am officially freaked out…
But, I am determined to at least start the thing- and as you say, I will have finished or not, and either way is OK!

  2. This reminds me of a story I heard about Margaret Laurence (Canadian author, “Stone Angel”, etc.). She was at a party and met a gentlemen who informed her he was a brain surgeon. He then asked her profession, and she told him she was a writer. “Ah,” he said. “I’ve often thought about taking up writing when I retire.” “Really?” she replied acerbicly. “I’ve often thought about taking up brain surgery when I retire.” Bottom line - writing ain’t easy, even if everyone else thinks it is. But we do it because it’s what we do.

  3. This year (my first year w/ Nano) I learned the imporance of an outline. Oops! Ah well, maybe I’ll do better next year.

Hopefully you were able to get that outline done and make some time in Nov!

  4. The Writing Process: A Beginning

When you get that first Aha! idea about writing a book, it usually thrills you with excitement. Maybe you’re like we are and you run upstairs (or down) to share you wonderful idea with colleagues and friends. Wow! I just
